Teaching + Coaching
Right now, I primarily work 1:1 with writers who are interested in developing their essays or memoir for possible publication, submission of a book proposal or book to get an agent, or in preparation for admission to a nonfiction MFA program. Some of the folks I’ve worked with have been published in places like the Washington Post, the New York Times, Parents, The Rumpus, Kenyon Review, and elsewhere, and have received offers of admission to places like the University of Iowa, University of Arizona, University of Minnesota, The Ohio State University, University of Pittsburgh, Hollins, Columbia University, and other programs. I’ve also spent several seasons as a mentor in the AWP Writer to Writer program, and most recently was the 2024 Storozynski Residential Writing Fellow at the Reilly Center for the University of Notre Dame.
I have also taught at StoryStudio Chicago.
Previously, I taught writing and composition at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, I tutored students individually and ran community workshops in the Chicago area. Here’s a selection of some of the classes I taught at Pitt:
- Seminar in Composition: Forms of the Essay
- Seminar in Composition: The Medical Humanities
- Introduction to Nonfiction and Journalism: How to be a writer
I also served as the teaching assistant for a documentary film course, where I taught techniques in storytelling and narrative.
Writing / Medicine
I work with hospitalists, emergency department physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals to help them develop their voices for a broader audience, including work for national publications. Through a series of personalized modules carefully crafted for healthcare providers, I can help you find your voice for an op-ed, a personal essay, or even a larger project, including your book. I offer a comprehensive approach that includes medically-themed readings and generative exercises which enable the writer to draft and polish new material in a way that they might not have considered beforehand. Due to my clinical background as an ER tech and EMT and my work in clinical bioethics, combined with my work as a medical writer for several large multinational pharmaceutical companies, I bring a certain expertise to the table and can help you write about patients and your medical practice in a compliant and ethical way. Together, we can develop your voice as a writer and get it ready for a larger stage.
